Global Recycling Day: Reduce, Reuse, Rethink.

Global Recycling Day is an annual event that aims to raise awareness of the importance of recycling and encourage people to take action and protect the environment by reducing waste. Recycling is a great way to reduce your household waste, but there are other R's that can make even more of an impact when paired with recycling. Reduce, Reuse, Repair and Refuse!

Reduce:

Reduce by shopping at zero waste, or bulk stores and bring your own containers. This is a great way to reduce plastic and save some money when stocking up on groceries. Try Bulk Barn, On The Move Organics or Reimagine Co.

Reuse:

Reuse or repurpose items when possible. You can use items like egg cartons, cardboard and other commonly recycled items for all kinds of crafts. You can also reuse by using washed plastic containers for storage and using reusable cutlery and cups. Give unwanted items a new life by donating, or convert them into new ideas, like making cleaning cloths out of damaged or worn-out t-shirts.

Repair:

Instead of throwing items out when they break, bring them to local repair cafes, like the one that Reimagine Co, London Public Library, and the City of London host across the city. The next date is Wednesday, March 20, 6-8 PM at the East London Library.

Refuse:

Refuse unneeded items. Before purchasing something new, see if there is a way you can borrow the item from a neighbour or friend. Taking a moment to think about the impact of each purchase can be a helpful way to avoid creating more waste.

Small acts can have an everyday impact.

When we Rethink waste reduction to include more than just Recycling, we can all find small opportunities to Reduce, Reuse, Repair and Refuse every single day.

Happy Global Recycling Day!
